Illness
and medication
Some
people experience hair loss after illness or some weeks
after surgery. This is mainly due to the amount of
stress afflicted during the operation or side effect of
medication to prevent infection during illness.
Others
lose hair because of chemotherapy used in cancer
treatment and anticoagulants.
Normally
the hair will return to normal once medication has been
stopped.
Having
too much vitamin A and anti-depressants can also cause
the hair to drop. Under-active thyroids, certain fungal
infections and hormonal imbalances have been know to
result in hair loss too.
Even
underlying problems such as lupus or diabetes may result
in excessive hair loss.
Medications prescribed for blood pressure, arthritis,
depression and birth control pill are also among the
reasons of hair loss. The best way to treat this is to
stop the medication or select other type of medicine.
Pregnancy
For
women, during pregnancy, high levels of particular
hormones cause the body to keep hair that would normally
fall out. When the hormones return to pre-pregnancy
levels, the hair falls out.
Pregnant
women may notice this within a period of about 3 months
after delivery.
There is
no need to worry because the hair will grow back to
normal after some months.
Improper
Hair care
This can
be one of the cause of hair loss. Excessive combing and
brushing can damage the hair.
Hair
styles such as braids or ponytails that pulls at the
hair also creates more stress on the hair.
Other
improper hair maintenance that would result in hair loss
includes using chemicals such as bleaches and dyes.
Genetics
Some
people lose hair because of heredity. This can be
inherited from the mother, father or from both parents.
Though
hair loss runs in the family, scientists now claim it
can be cured by gene manipulation
